While it's months away from garden season here - it's very much on my mind. We've kept a garden here for several years, but are planning some changes this year that I am very excited/hopeful about.
We are starting to move more towards raised beds to keep things easier for me to keep up with because I have arthritis in my neck, shoulders and spine. Had a good go-round with my Dr. about my gardening 'hobby' at all. It's o.k, I won. But the reality is I've hit a whole new learning curve. But I will learn it.
I am looking forward to sharing ideas and plans with other urban farmers as well.

Intro

Hi:

My name is Julie. Where is everyone at? lol Anyways we made the move from Fl to Az and have been getting things around here fixed and settled down. I have planted a few plants in containers, don't have the garden area like I did back in FL but we have something and am getting there. Have our goats running around right now, getting ready to downsize on them a bit and put more fence up so I can have a proper garden again. So does anyone know of a good forum for trading seeds. I have a big box full of seeds that were for growing in FL and cant get them to grow here, so thought about trading.

Well hope to hear from someone...anyone lol..miss talking on the forums and meeting new ppl.

Bye for now,
Laura

First Urban Farmers Forum

Good morning Urban Farmers, I am just tickled pink to be on here. I currently live with my high school sweetheart/hubby our two big dogs and 4 backyard hens for eggs on a tiny city lot.

On my little lot we grow grapes, three fruit trees and lots of veggies and herbs. We raise our own chickens and turkeys for meat by bartering space for meat with my oldest daughter who owns some acreage near by.

I love cooking, canning, sewing and I make my own soap.

Nice to meet you all!

New to Urban Farming

Good afternoon!

I'm learning quite a lot about permaculturing our tiny, postage stamp-sized lot in the city. If I grow it myself, I know what's in it.

This fall we'll be putting in pears and hazelnuts, and we've talked one of our neighbors into fostering one of the pear trees. it's all very exciting. I go so far as to say organic is local not trucked in form 100 miles or more, does not deplete the soil or serounding areas, and has no assistant from big corporations who see a big market in "organic". I'm really excited to meet all of you. I'm from Northern California. My husband and I just got a house and I am so excited to have a yard that I can plot a garden in. I've been container gardening for about three years now. Basil and Jalepeno peppers seemed to be the only plants that I've been able to help thrive.

I have all these excited plans for a vegetable garden and a moonlight garden. We have a cherry tree that came planted in the back yard. Our house used to be the main estate house of an orchard forever ago so I'm hoping that means my soil will be good.

I'm looking forward to getting to know you all and to hopefully learn a thing or two. In order to see what everyone is up to, does one have to just search through people's profile pages or is there an update page where you can see what people are posting recently, or something like a "what's happening" type page?? So far I have just been seeing what other people are doing by going to random profiles, but if there is something else that I don't know about it would be great to find out! I own 1 acre and have 3 horses, 12 dairy goats, 9 sled dogs and 30 laying type chickens, 15 of which are chicks plus a small container garden. Since my town has no zoning, I am perfectly legal, but they are constantly harassing me. The town sort of defends me, they have to, but it's still hard knowing that the neighbors who mostly don't work have access to my small farm and beloved critters when I am at work. I live alone and do all my own work around the "farm". I do my best to keep the fly population to a minimum, my hay guy hauls the horse manure away (what I don't use in my garden or my friends garden) and I keep the goat manure and chicken manure in a compost pit for my own use. Once it's composted I bring it to my friends garden also. Most people can't smell the "farm smell" but the neighbors are always complaining.

Anyone else have neighbor problems? If so, how do you all deal with them?

Ummm, I'm doing something wrong here

I have my user name and password. But when I use it to try to set up my Farmer in the City profile to add pics of my garden like others do in the "Community" section (top row of the screen here between "Gardening" and "Videos" ) it won't let me do anything. It says my username or password is incorrect. I try to register for that (thinkin maybe i have to register for that seperately??) it tells me my username is already used...(my user name is rather unique to me...) So it means I am not "getting" something.
